Upgrade old IGUs |
|
Use LiteZone® to upgrade old or failed IGUs for improved comfort and reduced energy costs.
Most older homes have at least one large "picture" window which is a significant source of discomfort from drafts and radiant exchanges, often has problems with condensation, and is responsible for a disproportionate share of the heating bills.
Typical 1" thick IGUs without low-e coats or gas fills are only about R2 centre of glass and about R1.5 for the overall window. Replacing these inefficient IGUs with LiteZone® insulating glass would tremendously improve the comfort of the spaces next to those windows, in both winter and summer, while reducing costs for heating and cooling. The greatest benefit will come from upgrading the glass units in the largest windows or in walls with expansive glass. The best LiteZone® glass unit for your upgrade will depend in part on the wall construction, the existing window frames, and the details of the desired window treatments (e.g. blinds and drapes). For example, a wood frame non-opening window set in a wall that is 7" thick overall (i.e. typical "2 x 6" wall construction), can accommodate the LiteZone® |
L0679 product group of glass units which are 4.4" thick. These units have insulating values up to ~R15 centre of glass and R12.2 for the overall window.
If in this example blinds are to be hung within the window opening (instead of wall mounted), then the better choice might be the LiteZone® L0579 product group of glass units. These units are only 3.6" thick and have ~R13 centre of glass and R10.6 for the overall window. In either scenario in our example, the existing wood frame does not need to be changed out. Only the wooden glass stops will need to be changed to allow for the 1" glass unit sightline, and to place the glass stops in new positions to accommodate the thicker LiteZone® glass unit.
