New Thicker IGUs Enable a New Path to Passive House This is an extended version of the presentation given on May 10th, 2023, at the Passive House Canada Conference in Hamilton, ON by Greg Clarahan, President of LiteZone Glass Inc. New thicker insulating glass units (IGUs) make possible very high window insulating values. Thicker LiteZone® IGUs can achieve the Passive House Institute's (PHI) arctic and cold climate requirements with high solar heat gain IGUs. Alternately PHI cold climate requirements can be achieved using LiteZone® IGUs with ultra high insulating values and very low solar heat gain coefficients to minimize energy requirements year-round, without additional costs to control overheating in the summer. This technical presentation explains why LiteZone® embraces thicker IGUs for ultra high performance and how thicker IGUs can be installed in a wall without traditional frames to reduce costs and thermal transmission while achieving an attractive minimalistic aesthetic. |

LiteZone® insulating glass units are featured in a video published on Green Energy Futures' YouTube Channel: SUPER WINDOWS - LiteZone R22 glass units a game-changer for green homes - Full Story FULL STORY - Net-Zero and passive houses can have 16 thick walls that reach up to R50 insulation value. Windows, even efficient triple-paned are typically R7 or R8 are by far the weakest link. Greg Clarahan set out to solve this dilemma and his company LiteZone Glass is now producing windows with insulation values as high as R22, the equivalent of a 2x6 wall stuffed with insulation. These windows are game-changers that could change the way we think about building super efficient net-zero or passive homes.
